LABORATORY TECHNICIAN

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
Must possess the ability to perform the following:
Perform the duties of a medical laboratory technician (Generalist).
Work closely with the Administrative Director, other technologists, technicians, and phlebotomists
Work in all areas of the laboratory, inpatient and outpatient areas.
Be subject to frequent interruptions.
Be willing to work beyond normal working hours, and take emergency call if needed
Cope with possible subjection to infectious diseases and substances.
Perform certain clerical duties
Clean and maintain laboratory equipment and work areas.
Participate in gathering quality assurance information and report to a supervisor.
Report laboratory results to those who are authorized to receive results.
Communicate effectively, and deal tactfully with physicians, other hospital personnel, fellow department personnel, patients, and the general public,
Help maintain adequate stock and supply levels.
Attend appropriate in-service activities and meetings.
Age specific requirements: Should possess adequate skills and knowledge (within education, training, and experience) to distinguish, assess, act, and report upon the needs of neonates, infants, children, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients, as related to the clinical laboratory.
Must be certified in CPR or become certified within 3 months of employment
Knows how to perform venipuncture on neonates, infants, and children, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients using a syringe, butterfly, and vacutainer.
Other miscellaneous duties as directed by supervisors—within the scope of training and ability
1. Qualifications:
Successful completion in an accredited college or university, of a course of study which meets all academic requirements for an Associate degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or one of the chemical, physical, or biological sciences; or
Successful completion in an accredited or recognized proprietary school, of a course of study in Medical Laboratory Technology or science; or
Successful completion in an official military laboratory procedures course, of at least twelve calendar months of study; or
Graduation from high school and four years' experience in appropriate areas of testing in an accredited hospital – prior to September 1, 1992.
At least one year of experience as a registered or certified Medical Laboratory Technician is preferred.
In the case of military trainees, at least one year as a technician trainee in the Laboratory of an accredited hospital is required.
Must possess adequate knowledge to work without direct supervision in the following areas.
Specimen collection, Microbiology, Routine & Preventive maintenance, Chemistry, Parasitology, Quality Control, Urinalysis, Serology, Hematology, Blood Bank, and Coagulation.
Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant.
Must acquire knowledge of hospital and departmental practices, procedures, and guidelines
Must be knowledgeable of federal and state laws as related to laboratory medicine.
2. Physical requirements:
Must be able to sit, stand, bend, and ambulate effectively
Must possess the use of arms, hands, legs, feet, or use prosthetics that will accommodate these functions adequately, so that the requirements of this position can be fully met.
Must possess sight/hearing senses or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately, so that the requirements of this position can be fully met.
Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position
Must be in good general health and demonstrate emotional stability
Must be able to lift and move up to 30 pounds
3. Job Duties and Responsibilities:
A. HEMATOLOGY:
1. Has a thorough knowledge of the requirements for specimen acceptance and rejection.
2. Can operate the hematology analyzer proficiently, prepare quality slides for differentials, set up and read sedimentation rates, manual WBC counts, manual reticulocyte counts, and differentials.
3. Performs and documents quality control according to established policy.
B. CHEMISTRY:
1. Can perform tests and interpret results of tests completed on all chemistry analyzers.
2. Performs and documents quality control testing and maintenance work.
3. Understands the basic operation of the chemistry analyzers and can troubleshoot instrument and reagent problems.
4. Verifies by retest, all critical values and other tests according to policy.
C. URINALYSIS, PARASITOLOGY AND MISCELLANEOUS TESTING
1. Can proficiently perform dip stick testing, pregnancy tests, and read urine microscopies
2. Documents and performs quality control testing and reports QC problems.
3. Understands the basic operation of the Urine Strip analyzer and can troubleshoot instrument and reagent problems.
4. Proficiently tests for occult blood.
5. Proficiently performs wet preps
D. BLOOD BANK:
1. Can proficiently perform type & Rh, antibody screens, type and crossmatch, direct coombs, and process platelets and fresh frozen plasma.
2. Performs all clerical duties necessary to the processing, disposition, ordering, and charging of blood products.
3. Performs and documents daily quality control and temperature checks.
4. Knows the Blood Bank policies for storage requirements, identification, and release of blood products as well as the procedure for emergency release of blood products.
5. Knows how to use and maintain the plasma thawer.
6. Maintains an adequate supply of blood products and reagents.
7. Properly orders and returns blood products per lab policy.
8. Follows proper procedure and policy when attaching and removing Blood Bank wristbands
E. MICROBIOLOGY:
1. Proficiently prepares and interprets gram stains.
2. Performs and documents quality control and antibiogram data and notifies appropriate individuals of reportable organisms.
3. Can properly log in cultures and label and plate specimens on appropriate media.
4. Is aware of potential pathogens for each source and has knowledge of the growth requirements of organisms involved in disease and can isolate, identify, and perform sensitivities on pathogens isolated.
5. Can operate and maintain the blood culture analyzer and Microscan
F. IMMUNOLOGY:
1. Can proficiently perform various kit tests.
2. Performs quality control testing per policy and procedure
G. COAGULATION:
1. Operates the coagulation analyzer and backup analyzer proficiently.
2. Can collect and test specimens for bleeding time.
H. GENERAL:
1. Properly labels all specimens with 2 identifiers
2. Follows hospital hand washing policy
3. Demonstrates competency when performing laboratory procedures.
4. Maintains a clean, hazard free work area and documents this by initialing the daily decontamination log sheet.
5. Practices economy and is careful with hospital supplies and equipment.
6. Reports for work on time and clocks IN and OUT properly.
7. Uses time well in the performance of work duties.
8. Reports STAT and critical values to those who are authorized to receive results.
9. Completes continuing education assignments in a timely manner
10. Wears Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required by OSHA.
J. AGE SPECIFIC:
1. Uses good blood collection technique (excluding venipuncture) on neonatal patients.
2. Uses good blood collection technique on infant patients.
3. Uses good blood collection technique on children.
4. Uses good blood collection technique on adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
5. Demonstrates adequate knowledge of neonatal and infant test result ranges.
6. Demonstrates adequate knowledge of children and adolescent test result ranges.
7. Demonstrates adequate knowledge of adult and geriatric test result ranges.
8. Demonstrates competence in the application of techniques and equipment used in neonatal, infant, and children specimen collection and testing.
9. Demonstrates competence in the application of techniques and equipment used in adolescent, adult, and geriatric specimen collection and testing.
10. Demonstrates knowledge of appropriate kinds and volume of blood and blood products transfused in neonates, infants, and children and consults with physicians as needed.
11. Demonstrates knowledge of appropriate kinds and volume of blood and blood products transfused in adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients and consults with physicians as needed.
K. LABORATORY INFORMATION SYSTEM:
1. Can enter single and multiple results and release and verify results from interfaced analyzers.
2. Can print collection lists and labels, and order tests.
3. Can perform patient inquiry and retrieve lab reports.
4. Can enter text comments, cancel tests, and pull up a specimen tracking screen
5. Can generate a site batch for reference lab tests
6. Knows what to do if all or part of the LIS fails. -

The Mental Health Technician Trainee is a permanent full-time position with the Alabama Department of Mental Health. No examination is required. This is beginning-level work in training for the care, habilitation, and rehabilitation of persons with mental illness. Minimum qualifications are a high school diploma or GED. NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY and on-the-job training is provided. Overtime required. Weekend and Holiday work is required on a rotational basis. Employees who are required to work a holiday will accrue that day for later use. Pre-employment background check and drug screen are required.
MINIMUM PAY AT APPOINTMENT:
$14.11/$16.11 depending on the shift worked*
MINIMUM PAY AFTER SIX (6) MONTHS:
$15.06/$17.06 depending on shift worked*
